In 2021 Long Islanders spent more time outside due to COVID-19 restrictions.

There was a rising number of Americans affected by the West Nile virus, which is spread by mosquito bites.  This prompted health experts to advise people to use repellents and to contact mosquito control professionals to fight against these pests.  

At  least 14 people in New York had been infected with the mosquito-borne West Nile virus. According to preliminary official data, 479 instances have been documented nationwide, with 21 people dying.
